Info Post
In 2009 we had a record from a visitor to the County that a pair of green woodpeckers bred near Newport. This year we received another record of an adult green woodpecker feeding young in SM93T (Fishguard) - again reported by visiting bird-watchers (different people). This followed a spring 2010 record of one recorded by Tony Taylor in SN03J (just east of Newport). Just recently (whilst doing a winter-TTV in SN03Y) a single green woodpecker was recorded by David Wheeler in the vicinity of Tycanol NNR.

Despite concerns that our green woodpecker population may be dwindling and close to extinction in the County, they still appear to be hanging on in N Pembs., possibly now having disappeared from the south of the County? It would be useful if we could get more confirmed Atlas records from N Pembs (in fact anywhere in Pembs) to help prove that a small population is still hanging on. Perhaps some of those under-recorded tetrads dotted about the county hold a key to unlocking more information on this species?
