Noted the start of a steady passage of white wagtails at Stackpole over the last week or so. Today though it was interesting to watch a handsome male white singing and then fighting with a male pied (also singing) at a territory he has been occupying for a few weeks now. A female (pied) was clearly the one raising the passions of both birds.
I assume that the white will move on, but wonder if he might just manage to mate with the pied female before he goes? He was certainly trying and seemed to be getting her attentions! She has been nest-building for a few days now. In Scotland there is certainly regular evidence of white breeding and I believe pied/white hybrids breeding too. Perhaps our west coast wagtails are getting in on the act, but which tail will end up wagging most?
