Yesterday, noted that there were at least five green woodpeckers about (a pair and a separate threesome). Not all were seen at very close range but at least two were typical speckled/spotted juvs. It may be that we have three juvs out now, but there maybe a second pair too - in the past we normally had at least two breeding pairs.

These birds flew over the lakes to feed on nearby grassland. Quite a lot of ants emerging (mating flying males/queens etc) in long grass appeared to be attracting at least two of these woodpeckers into quite tall ungrazed grassland on the north-facing slope of the Mere pool valley, behind Broadhaven dunes.

Quail also heard in cerial field on edge of Castlemartin Range late in the day - nr Trenorgan (a typical location for them on the peninsula).
