Noted the record of the downy owlet (almost certain tawny). Cliff, not sure which tetrad you live in but if you are somewhere in the SM93 10km sq, so far there are no confirmed breeding season records of tawny owls in that particular square in the current Atlas. So it would be great to get this one confirmed and added.
Have a look at www.bto.org/birdatlas to get to sign in page to enter it as a roving record.
We really are short of confirmed breeding owl records (all species) in many places.
For Tawny owls, so far there are no breeding season records at all in SM83, SM92 or SM93.
For barn owls, breeding season evidence it is even thinner - there are no breeding season records yet from SM81, SM82, SM83, SM90, SM92, SN02, SN10, SN11, SN13 or SN23. There was a gap in SR99 but confirmed breeding this week so that square should change to red soon.
What has happened to little owls - are they about to go extinct on the Pembs mainland? Presently there are only 2 mainland records (probable breeding in a single tetrad in SN04 and one with no evidence of breeding in a single tetrad in SM81). The only other breeding season records coming from Skomer and Ramsey and even from these sites there is as yet no confirmed breeding! It really looks a bit grim for this species at present.
So more records of owls with breeding evidence would be welcomed if you can please.
Breeding owls - more records needed for the Atlas
