From Richard Ellis - I did the Angle Peninsula circuit early this am, clockwise beginning and ending at the Fresh West war memorial. A whitethroat approx every 50 metres all the way round. A couple of sedge warblers in E Blockhouse area. Last year I reported 3-4 garden warblers in the RNLI-Old Point House area, no sign of them (or lesser whitethroats) so far this year tho' a few blackcaps in the sycamore woodland along the Haven.
6 whimbrel at N end of Fresh West beach.
A good area for garden warblers (and for sorting them out from blackcaps!) is along the upper (western) woodland edge of Little Craig-y-Borion Wood on the Colby Estate. Follow the permissive bridleway up from Colby Lodge past the back of Club Cottage, past the ruined Little Craig y borion Farm and right up to the top. They really are beautiful birds with very subtle coloration. Little Craig-y-Borion Wood held wood warblers in the late 90's (after the clearance of conifer understorey from the oak woodland) but no sign of them for several years now.
