Western Bonelli's Warbler update
Info Post
The bird has been present in the willows in Porthmelgan Valley at St David's Head from about 11am this morning and was still present at 5pm. Everyone seems to have seen it well eventually despite the poor weather (it was feeding in bright sunlight initially). Apparently it is not clear that there are any reliable plumage features for distinguishing between Western and Eastern Bonelli's in autumn (British Birds Vol104 p597). Luckily this bird was calling persistently when first found and called later too, so there can be no doubt as to species, the bright, emphatic Willow Warbler-like 'phoo-eet' is a clincher. I believe this may be the 2nd for Pembs following the first ever British discovery on Skokholm in 1948. One other bird was not able to be identified as either Western or Eastern but I'm certain others can give chapter and verse on this, whereas I can't. For the record, two, possibly three Whinchats present.
