After spending last week watching mega birds on the stunning Isles of Scilly this afternoon I thought I'd try and find a rarity in north Pembs; Unfortunately no luck today.
However a visit to Carndeifog wood (SM994322) found plenty of activity within two spruce trees ~ 24 Crossbills, 5 Siskins, 2 Marsh Tits; Plus a female Great Spotted Woodpecker breaking cones off of the tree and flying away with them to cache for winter I guess; As I've only observed this behaviour in Jays before not Woodpeckers.
Walking back to the car I was transfixed by the aerial antics of 3 Ravens hasseling a Sparrowhawk, one Raven being very bold and holding onto the Sparrowhawks tail feathers! With the Sprawk retaliating by chasing the Ravens...
Puncheston.
